Bill (BT) Thibodeau has been playing bluegrass music since he was a child. He played his first paying gig when he was just
8 years old backing up his father, the legendary Sam Tidwell, on guitar. When all the other kids wanted to be firemen or lawyers
or such, he wanted to be a musician. Since then, BT has learned all the bluegrass instruments, played in countless bands,
promoted festivals and concerts, taught Bluegrass music and currently continues to do all of the above! Bill
currently teaches at Main Street Music Studio.
His latest project,
The String Winders, has all the makings of a premier Bluegrass band and promises to be a band to be remembered.
Nancy (Nanobass) Merrill has been playing bass longer than she's known BT, and that's saying something! Turned on to the Bluegrass scene by a friend at the ripe old age of 22, she quickly became addicted. She was not immersed in Bluegrass as a child, but grew up with a rich and open-minded appreciation of a wide variety of music from Jimi Hendrix to opera and everything in between. But it was her strong sense of rhythm and sensitivity to the groove of a song that caught BT's attention when he was looking for a bass player to join him back in the 80s when he was playing with Bluegrass Supply Co. Nancy and BT have been been making great music together ever since, and The String Winders promises to carry on this tradition.
Born in Kentucky and raised in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, Ben Farrow has come by Bluegrass and Old Time String Music honestly. At age seven, he received his first guitar, a three-quarter sized nylon classical, as a Christmas gift from his Mammaw and Pappaw. Not two weeks after, his parents had signed him up for guitar lessons. Soon Ben was hooked and started his own band. About that same time, Ben seized upon an opportunity to participate in the renowned Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Program at East Tennessee State University. While enrolled in the program, Ben encountered other Bluegrassers who would eventually serve as his musical mentors. Ben currently resides in Old Town, ME, and though he often misses all of that Tennessee sunshine, he is pleased to be making his New England debut as a member of The String Winders.
An extraordinary musician, and all around nice guy, Bobby Coombs fills out The String Winders sound on dobro. Raised in a musical family, Bobby has been surrounded by the sounds of traditional country and Bluegrass music all his life. He still recalls his first 'Sears' guitar, a gift from his parents at the age of 8. Since then, performing has been an integral part of his life. As a young adult, Bobby left home to play music on the road with several popular country bands traveling throughout the south. But when being on the road 24/7 lost it's charm, Bobby headed back home to Maine. Upon his return, he enrolled in the University of Maine music program and majored in guitar. Since then, he's been active in the Maine Bluegrass scene, and The String Winders were delighted when circumstances allowed him the freedom to become a full time member of the band! |
